What To Do With Old Moving Boxes

When you are moving to a new home, you want to make sure you are using quality moving boxes to protect your belongings. The dilemma however is what to do with all of those boxes once you have moved. I know many of you feel as to why you should keep them, as you no longer have a use for them once you are moved in, however below are several scenarios to help you figure out what to do with your moving boxes.

Salvage

Purchasing new moving boxes is always your best bet to protect your items, but if you elect to reuse a box, reuse it once, then either get rid of it or use it in a different way. Typically most boxes do not have a shelf life of more than 2 uses. Moving boxes normally become unstable (bent, ripped, cut, get wet, or crushed) and can cause more harm to your items than good. Boxes like these can actually be used for a few different uses. If you have boxes that are still in relatively good shape store them by disassembling them and make a pile.  These boxes can be used for storage in the attic  for (clothes, china, Christmas decorations, etc..) If you frequently sell items on Ebay or Craigslist you can use them for the items you are selling. These boxes are also good to use for moving mirrors or any sharp objects.

Recycle

All of us want to do our part to protect the environment. Rather than throw your boxes in the trash, break them down and stack them in your recycling bin.

Trash

You will always have boxes during a move that have been destroyed. If any boxes are filthy, bent and broken, chemical spills, exposed to the elements, etc…then you best option is to throw in the trash.

If In Doubt, Give Them Out – Give Them Away

If your moving boxes are still in excellent condition, give them to someone who can use them. Reach out to family, friends or neighbors to see if anyone can use them. If you are hosting a yard sale, put a sign out for (Free Boxes). You can also put ads on Craigslist or a neighborhood community board. Ask local schools, charities, churches, etc…someone will always have a need for boxes.

Sell Them

If the boxes you have are virtually brand new, you can try to sell them online and pick up a few bucks. It can’t hurt to try, as you never know who is in need of moving boxes. You could be saving someone a few bucks by selling your quality moving boxes at a fraction of the cost for new boxes.

Kids and Crafts

If you have little children you know they love to play with boxes. You can make a little home for them to play in, they can color the exterior of the box, you can make crafts, and ornaments, etc.…Let their little imaginations run wild.
