Packing and Moving a Bedroom The Right Way

As with any room, bedrooms aren’t the most difficult to pack however it can still be overwhelming. Like many of us our bedrooms can be a cluttered mess and organizing that mess takes both time and a plan. In order to have your room packed and ready prior to the Moving Company’s arrival date, there are some simple things you can do to make the process easier on you.

Have the Right Supplies

Prior to packing make sure you have purchased the right supplies for the job. It is a bedroom so you will need an assortment of moving boxes (ex: wardrobe boxes, medium to large boxes, file boxes, etc…), shipping tape, multi-purpose shears and different colored markers or labels to organize your bedrooms contents. Create an inventory list for each bedroom; documenting each room’s furniture, specific household items, and color code boxes according to each room so items don’t get mixed up with other rooms boxes. Also make sure you label boxes that are fragile so the moving company knows which items should be handled with special care.

De-clutter

The most difficult part to any move is getting rid of items you have accumulated over the years. Go through the de-cluttering process by creating piles (the keep pile and the get rid of pile). This is important as it will reduce what you have to pack and take with you when you move, and it can help someone in need by donating the items you no longer want. Make sure during this process that you separate items you absolutely need and pack them in an overnight suitcase (ex: medicine, toiletry items, clothes for work, jewelry, etc…).

Start Small

Tackling a bedroom can get overwhelming so it is better to start off small. Work backwards and focus on contents that may be on top of your dresser or nightstand, jewelry, books, clothing in drawers, file cabinets, etc…While packing these items make sure you stay organized and tape, label and store each box according to their room and whether or not they are fragile. We also recommend you pack jewelry and items of sentimental value and keep those with you at all times when you move.

Packing-Breakable Items First

As you are packing the smaller items, you should also work on those items that are breakable. Pack up knick-knacks, mirrors, picture frames, lamps, vases, etc…and wrap them in plastic bubble wrap, store them in a secure box and label the box fragile to prevent those items from being broken.

Clothing and Bedding

When tackling your closets it is important to sort items that are out of season and pack those items in boxes first. Then focus on the items you typically wear. For dresses, suits, formal attire or items that can’t be folded, purchase wardrobe boxes. For items that can go in boxes, make sure you fold them and store them neatly. If you do not have shoe boxes, pack shoes in boxes where you have bedding, sheets or towels as not to ruin or crush your shoes.

Bedroom Furniture

You may need help with your bedroom furniture, however if you feel you are ready for the task then you will want to disassemble your bed frame, secure dresser drawers by wrapping them shut (make sure you remove the contents first). Move all items to the side where the movers can easily access and remove those items first.

Area Rugs & Curtains

If your room has area rugs, make sure you vacuum them, then roll them up for moving. If you are taking curtains with you, clean them prior to removing and hang them in wardrobe boxes as to limit wrinkles.
